Developing Great People Performance – The Four Performance Essentials

Great businesses are made up of great people doing great things. Maximising the return from your people investment is critical to ongoing business success and profitability, particularly during ‘difficult’ economic times.

‘Managing’ and improving people performance therefore should be at the heart of the business activities of any progressive organisation.

Developing great people performance requires us to balance the needs and development of our people, with the needs of the organisation.

Developing great people performance is partly about how well those in leadership and management roles behave and operate. It also about how ‘enabling’ the policies, procedures and processes are within the organisation.

For some, performance management is a machine that is ‘wheeled out’ when performance is not to the standard we want or need it to be. In best practice terms, this could not be further from the truth. Performance management is not a sporadic activity; it is a continuous ‘way of life’ for the truly great organisation, and truly great people manager.

It's important to recognise a fundamental fact: that everyone is capable of exceptional effort, productivity and performance. Where people fail to perform in any respect it is only because one or more of the four performance essentials were not sufficiently prevalent.

New Chapter have teamed up with the business and training consultancy People Development Works to help clients improve the way they retain and develop their people. We have developed a simple and effective model and approach for helping businesses develop performance more easily. We call it ‘The Four Performance Essentials’.

Over the next four issues, we will identify and provide tips on each of these four essentials for great performance.
