Car buried in snowHi!

In the last few days we've seen hurricane-force winds in Scotland (not to mention snow and ice in generous quantities).

So now is the perfect time to think about what your company will do if key people can't get in to the office.

The answer? VoIP and remote networking: the perfect combination.

Keeping in touch on the phone...

If you have just one or two homeworkers the simplest solution is to make sure each of them has a broadband connection and a broadband router, and then they can plug the phone into their router. Ideally you'll want to ensure that voice calls take priority over data, so there's no loss of quality on the phone calls.

If more people work from home you may need a central VoIP server running remote extensions through the Internet. This has added benefits: calls between homeworkers and the office will be free, and all external calls can be routed through the VoIP server and billed centrally.

...with extra benefits

You'll be able to give your homeworkers phone numbers from any area code - so even if they live in Timbuktu your customers and contacts will still think they're dialling Taunton (and it won't cost them any more to do so). You can even move existing business numbers, including 0844 numbers, onto the VoIP system.

And if your homeworker happens to move from Timbuktu back to Taunton, they can take their phone number with them, plug into a broadband connection and be up and running again before their moving boxes have arrived. (So no more endless calls to your telecoms provider - after all, how much on-hold music can one human being stand?)

Fireside computingBetter yet, the calls your homeworker makes will be very significantly cheaper (typically 1p per minute as against BT's standard 7.5p per minute).

They'll also benefit from extra bells and whistles like free voicemail, simple diversion to mobiles, CRM database integration, voice recording, and free calls to other users in the same range of business extensions.

A qualified installer can set up a fully functional VoIP extension in an employee's home within 3 to 5 days of the order - and it usually takes less than an hour to install.

A nose for the best

Gadget is a savvy hound, and there's nothing he likes better than sniffing out a bargain.

Sniffing out a bargainSo he's been delighted to discover just how much www.local.google.com can help.

All he has to do is type in the postcode where he happens to be, type in 'dog biscuits' as a search term, and take his pick from the switched-on suppliers who've put their details up on the system.

Great if you're looking for dog biscuits. Or anything else.

Better yet if you're selling them. Or anything else.

So... Is your business on Google Local yet...?
