Hi <$salutation$>
What is VoIP?
Voice-over-Internet
Protocol (VoIP) is a way of using computer networks and the internet
to carry speech transmissions.
VoIP converts a voice signal from a telephone into
a digital signal that travels over the Internet, then
converts it back again at the other end. VoIP is now
widely accepted, and is being rapidly deployed as a core part of all
new telephone systems.
Is Skype a form of VoIP?
Skype is a free software programme that uses a peer-to-peer
VoIP application. Because it’s meant for home use it doesn’t
have the flexibility, or the call handling capabilities,
of a business PBX system.
Because
Skype uses its subscribers’ PCs to handle a conversation,
it isn’t possible to predict the quality of a call. That will depend
on the hardware each user has, and the quality of
their broadband connection. And Skype isn’t compliant with standards
for VoIP, so your choice of providers – and equipment – is
limited.
What’s
the advantage of VoIP?
There’s one huge advantage – VoIP is the undoubted future
of telephony! Its features, capability, flexibility,
quality and resilience go far beyond what has been
possible until now, and the benefits include
- Substantially lower call and line costs for business
- Simple to add even one new user at a time without the need for
additional, expensive hardware – and to add extra phones
using existing network cabling
- Even multi-site businesses can have all their telephone extensions
on the same network – so calls within the organisation
(even to other countries!) are free, and billing is centralised
- Wherever you go, you can take your numbers with you
- Fast, efficient disaster recovery – it’s easy
to divert calls to another location
- Conference calling, call forwarding and caller ID
come as standard.
Easy to integrate other services like voicemail,
e-mail and SMS.
Easier – and cheaper – to bring in advanced features
like video conferencing.
- Basic package includes complete, integrated
local and remote management and analysis tools.
- VoIP handles calls to emergency services
(unlike Skype)
- VoIP is ideally suited to every business – large
or small, local or international.
Larger
organisations get even more benefits, because they’ll need far
fewer trunk lines. One internet-based ‘SIP
trunk’ can handle many more calls than a conventional
trunk line.
And
the Bottom Line?
VoIP technology is now able to offer features
and reliability that compare very well with
traditional ISDN services. The lifetime cost is lower,
and return on investment is rapid.
In fact, the business case for it is overwhelming.
