Is it coming home this time?

It’s World Cup time again. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s one thing that’s certain – businesses everywhere will be experiencing that four-yearly phenomenon - ‘World Cup Absenteeism’.

Research by Active Health Partners indicates that absenteeism will rise by 20% on England’s first round match days (and coping with the aftermath of the celebrations). And, should they progress through the tournament, this may well increase - costing UK employers as much as £100m a day.

So are you ready for it? Well, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), 9 out of 10 employers don’t have any plans in place to manage staff absences.

What’s more, only 5% have a staff guidance strategy – do you have a policy in place?

Times have been tough recently so this is an excellent opportunity for you to generate goodwill by accommodating flexible working requests from your staff – within reason of course.

You could look at allowing some staff time off, names out of a hat might be the fairest approach. Offer flexible working to allow for longer lunch breaks or a later start depending on when matches are being played. Why not provide a TV somewhere in the office and allowing staff to wear football shirts on match days to generate team spirit?

Whatever approach you take, don’t forget your staff that aren’t footie fans. Make sure you offer them the same flexibility. Give them the opportunity to pick up some overtime when covering for their football-mad colleagues, or give them time off for charity events.

Whatever you decide, make sure your policy for the World Cup period is communicated clearly to all staff. And ultimately, don’t forget, if you need urgent cover, just give us a call!

Who do you know that fits the bill?

Just recently we have seen a big increase in the number of local companies looking for people to fulfil the following roles, both temporary and permanent:

  • Sales
  • Customer Service
  • Telesales (outbound and inbound)
  • Team Leaders
  • Accountancy
