'No'! Say it. Mean it. Love it.

Busy day at the office...Hi!

A long day gets longer. Interruptions. Phone calls. Endless emails! Your 9 pm dinner date is looking as remote and as jolly as Scott’s Last Camp - and suddenly there’s yet another 11th hour crisis, and once again it’s drop what you’re doing and all hands on deck!

Wow! You’re so popular! But love it or hate it, you’re merely human and there’s only so many hours.

So, what could help on such a day?

No, an extra hour in the day is not the right answer. Let’s face it – that could go on forever.

The correct answer is – saying no.

Because, unless you’re a person with complete mastery of life’s chessboard, the inability to say no can mean a loss of control leading to ill-health, stress, poor performance, loss of reputation... ruin.

And it’s obvious why you don’t say no. You’re a professional, driven by a need to give satisfaction: you have aspirations and you’re anxious not to cause offence or disappointment.

Plus, of course, it’s not always easy to say no. For instance, when should you say no? Obviously, you would decline a task that’s beyond your competence. (Wouldn’t you?) In other cases, though, you could ask yourself a few questions. What would be the consequences if you refused? (Does your job spec allow you to say no?) If you did as asked, would your own core goals be advanced?

As for how to say no, here are this month’s tips. When saying no -

  • Just say no...Tone of voice and body language are crucial.

A look straight in the eye
(not pointy things like scissors)

  • Ask for time to think.

‘I’ll get back to you’
( in, say, a year)

  • Appreciate the importance of what you’re being asked to do.

‘Forty billion euros? Is that really worth the hassle?’

  • Use reasons, not excuses.

Never forget the classic exchange. ‘My hamster just died.’
(Again)

  • Stay positive.

‘An office on Rockall? That’s genius!’

  • Suggest an alternative solution or someone else better qualified to do it.

‘Have a word with Jenny. I’m fairly certain she’s been in Strangeways.’

The foregoing will give you a start as you set out to retake control of your life and sanity. But for more detailed advice on the art of saying no at the right time and in the right place email me your question at info@worksmartplayhard.co.uk .
